    Description

    Up for auction is a
Vntg Uncommon Bausch & Lomb Binocular/Stereoscopic Head Microscope #137907 & Wooden Carrying Case that was used in the Utah & Idaho Sugar Co. Laboratory, Toppenish WA. Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. was based in Rochester N.Y.  The serial number 137907 indicateds that it was manufactured in the 1919-20 time period. Total weight of the case and the microscope is 11.95 lbs. The microscope is 11" tall, 4 1/2" wide and 6 1/4" deep. The case is 13" long, 9" wide and 3 1/4" deep and has corner finger joints. I has a large brass plated steel carrying handle on one end of the case. There are two sets of objectives lenses still attached inside the case. These lenses would have been slid into the track below the binocular head and would reach down nearly to the top of the specimen deck. There are two Railway Express Agency paper labels attached to the bottom side of the case. It was shipped from the Utah-Idaho Sugar Co. General Laboratory, Midvale, Utah to Utah-Idaho Sugar Co. Care of Chemist Toppenish, Wash. There are no dates on these labels. When comparing to other Bausch & Lomb microscopes I think this a fairly early one, perhaps from the early 1920's. There is a double sided adjustable mirror above the feet of the microscope to help illuminate the specimen. I'm selling this for a friend who had a relative that worked as an engineer at the Toppenish Sugar Factory for many years.
Seeking to become more self-reliant in the remote Utah territory, leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints looked into cultivating sugar beets.
U&I started refining sugar beets in Toppenish WA State in 1919, but the work halted six years later when the sugar beet crop became infested with white flies. But sugar processing resumed in Toppenish 1936, after a resistant strain of beets was developed and a new plant was built, with operations going into full swing in 1937. The 1937 season resulted in the processing of 85,000 tons of beets. By the 1960s, the factory had contracts with 600 farmers, giving it 650,000 tons of sugar beets, with a yield of 23 tons per acre. The factory output was 65,000 tons of sugar.
The plant was closed in 1979.
