1986 Lotus Turbo Esprit original vintage advertisement.
    DESCRIPTION:
Mass production will give you a Porsche or a Corvette. It will not give you a Lotus Esprit Turbo.
An an industry that worships at the altar of mass production, it is hardly surprising that 99.99% of its output is produced that way.
However, what is surprising is the fact that eleven of those huge automated companies (churning out some 40,000 cars a day) were, at last count, getting engineering and design help from Lotus.
Lotus, on a good day, “churns” out an Esprit and a half.
It is, essentially, a hand-crafted car.
Now, why do some of the true industrial geniuses of America, Europe and Japan wend their way to our plant, tucked awav in a far corner of the English countryside?
Perhaps because we offer genius of another kind.
    Shockwaves at Indy.
That Lotus is made of the stuff of legends first became evident at the Indianapolis 500 in 1963 when a knee-high mini-rocket came blazing out of nowhere to change the face of racing forever.
Up against the behemoth thunder machines of that day, Lotus with its revolutionary chassis design, aerodynamic profile and extreme power-to-weight ratio came in a strong second, its first time out.
In ’64 Lotus took both first and second in the qualifying heats.
Then got it all together in '65. Qualifying first, second and third. Winning first, second and fourth.
And the mad scramble was on.
Lotus look-alikes began appearing on Grand Prix courses as fast as they could be hammered out.
Being mere copies, they performed like it.
And Lotus went on to burn itself into the record books at a pace unparalleled in the history of racing.
But enough perspective. Now, what is Lotus today?
It is one of the very few race cars ever to make the complete transition to pure sports car.
In a World of Mass Produced Sports Cars,
    Stubborn Individualism.
While we at Lotus wholeheartedly embrace todav's technology, we employ it to augment the hand, not replace it.
Our computer-guided milling machines assure us of critically precise engine tolerances. Computer-controlled optical scanners reject components not up to our standards.
Still, the engine is unhurriedly assembled by hand, with all parts (right down to the valve springs) so carefully matched and balanced that it takes two full weeks to complete a single engine.
Because the same care is taken in building the entire car, six weeks arc required from ground zero to its first test run.
The chassis is hand-assembled and hand-welded. The entire unit is then galvanized to lock out corrosion.
The body is of a special carbon-fiberglass composite developed by Lotus. It can’t rust.
The upholstery is glove-soft Connolly leather, which our friends at Rolls Rovcc also use. Every seam is stitched by hand and every piece so carefully matched that five hides arc required to do one car.
The Lotus body is given nine coats of paint. Each coat is rubbed down by hand. The final coat is a clear coat, hand polished to give Lotus the most envied finish in the business.
Lotus tires are not your usual stock item. Our engineers worked long hours with Goodyear in developing a tire specifically for the Turbo Esprit. One that works in total harmony with the car’s weight, power and suspension system.
And now the big one. Can such a precision instrument take a beating?
Consider the unfortunate film director who, not so long ago, sent a Lotus flying off a cliff in expectation of shooting a spectacular fall, followed by a crashing breakup.
He got the fall and the crash. But no breakup. Not even on the second try. Or the third.
Sledge hammers finally were brought to bear and the director got his breakup.
    So What Could We Improve?
This 16-valve, 4-cylinder mid-engine dynamo will take you from 0 to 150 faster than a prudent man would care to do it.
Still, we boosted the horsepower a bit to 215. And the new '86s are equipped with fuel injection.
Not for speed. For quickness. Which is what real driving is all about.
A computerized fuel metering system is now also part of the power plant. It virtually anticipates split-second power needs. And improves gas mileage, giving the car a touring range of over d00 miles.
And to give you more of the open road while you're out there, a totally integrated, removable roof panel is now standard on every Turbo Esprit.
We also made refinements in the turbocharger, suspension, brakes and tires to keep the car in tune with its new power.
The Esprit is now as close to perfect pitch-power, precision, predictability working in unison-as a car is likely to get.
"It puts me at one with the road as no car ever has” is how one enthusiast summed it up.
He also commented on feeling secure in the car because it is very forgiving and "...always has something in reserve.”
    But that's another whole story.
